Bible-Saturated Preaching
Passion At Sovereign Joy we are passionate about the Word of God and preaching from it because hearing God's Word is essential to the life of a healthy church. Our passion for Bible-saturated preaching stems from a conviction that sermons with deep roots in Scripture will be most profitable to the congregation. That's what the Apostle Paul was saying in 2 Timothy 3:16-4:2 when he wrote that all Scripture is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness and charged Timothy to “preach the word”.
Perfect God's Word, preached, is profitable because it is perfect. King David wrote in Psalm 19 that the law of the Lord is perfect, sure, right, pure and true. God is good and so is his Word. Or to say it another way; “In God we trust. Therefore, in God's Word we trust.”
Piercing Accordingly, if we trust the Bible, then we trust God to use it for it's intended purposes. The writer of Hebrews said “the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) We believe God uses the preaching of his Word to penetrate our hearts and expose our unbelief.
Powerful But once his Word reveals our sin, we are not left without hope. The very Word that exposes our sinfulness also reveals our Redeemer and gives life. To paraphrase Peter, we are born again and made alive in Christ through the living and abiding Word. And the Word of God will have this effect when we hear the Gospel preached (1 Peter 1:22-25). This Gospel, Paul says, “is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). Therefore, if the power of preaching is derived from the Bible, then effective preaching must be infused with the written Word of God.
